One of the joys of staying at The Milkwood Collection is how easy it is to fit in a walk without turning it into a “mission”. From gentle loops on Leisure Isle to iconic viewpoints at the Eastern Head, you can get great scenery and fresh air within minutes.
Below are some of the best nearby walks.
The Leisure Isle loop

Leisure Isle is ideal for walking because it’s flat, quiet, and scenic. A simple loop around the island takes you past lagoon views, small beaches and leafy residential streets.
A great add-on is Steenbok Nature Reserve on the far side of the island. It’s an easy detour with short paths through fynbos and open areas, plus lovely lagoon viewpoints. It’s especially good if you want a slightly more “nature” feel without committing to a hike.
Why guests like this walk:
- It’s easy at any fitness level
- It works at any time of day
- You can keep it short or make it longer by adding Steenbok Nature Reserve
Eastern Head: two view options (top and bottom)
The Eastern Head gives you Knysna’s most famous views, and it’s worth doing in two parts if you have time.
The top of the Eastern Head (for sweeping views)

The best way to appreciate the landscape is to drive up to the top of the Eastern Headland, where you get wide views over the lagoon, the ocean and the Outeniqua Mountains in the distance. This is a short walk from the parking area to the viewpoints, rather than a long trail.
The bottom of the Eastern Head (for “from below” views)

For a different perspective, head to the bottom of the Eastern Head and take in the cliffs and channel from below. This gives you a closer, more dramatic sense of the scale and power of the entrance to the lagoon.
This “top and bottom” combination is a simple way to see The Heads properly without needing a long outing.
George Rex Drive: a scenic walk between The Milkwood Collection and Leisure Isle

If you want an easy walk that connects key points, George Rex Drive is the main link between your side of the lagoon and Leisure Isle, and it’s a reliable option at any tide.
It’s a straightforward, scenic road walk with plenty of lagoon views along the way, and it works well for:
- a morning coffee run to Leisure Isle
- a late-afternoon stroll
- a gentle “stretch your legs” walk between activities
This is also the most realistic “high tide” walking option near The Milkwood Collection, because when the tide is in, the water can cover the entire beach edge in front of the resort, which removes any chance of walking along the sand.
Low tide: an optional extra

At low tide, the lagoon opens into wide sandbanks, creating opportunities for longer walks across the beach towards Leisure Isle. Conditions vary daily, and timing matters, so this is best approached with awareness rather than expectation.
For a fuller explanation of how tides affect walking, paddling and lagoon access, see our guide: Knysna Where the Waters Meet: A Guide to Lagoon Tides & Safety
Choosing the best walk for the time of day
- Morning: Leisure Isle loop + Steenbok Nature Reserve (quiet and cooler)
- Midday: shaded stroll on the island streets, then a café stop
- Late afternoon: Eastern Head viewpoints (best atmosphere and views)
- Low tide windows: sandbank walk towards Leisure Isle (when conditions allow)
Walking as part of the stay
These walks don’t require special gear or planning, and that’s the point. A good Knysna walk is often just stepping out, moving a little, stopping when you feel like it, and returning when you’re ready.
