Knysna is perfect for this kind of holiday. There are beaches, forests, viewpoints, wildlife outings and a few good rainy-day options within driving distance. Start with the lagoon
From The Milkwood Collection, the lagoon is the best place to begin. Children do not always need a formal activity. A walk along the sand, a paddle at the edge of the water if the weather allows, or half an hour outside before breakfast can be enough to reset the day.
The Heads and Coney Glen
The Heads are a good short outing because they do not take up the whole day. Drive up to the viewpoint for the big view over the channel, or stop near East Head and take a walk along the lower pathway if conditions are pleasant.

Rainy-day outings in Knysna
The Knysna Waterfront is useful for sheltered browsing, a snack, boats to look at and the small Waterfront Junction display. It will not fill a whole day, but it can work well when you need an easy local outing that does not involve much driving.
The Motorcycle Room on Thesen Island is another good option, especially for older children, teens, parents or grandparents who like bikes, engines and old memorabilia. It is indoors, interesting and something a little different.
A bigger animal day near Plett
If you are happy to drive a little further, The Crags near Plettenberg Bay has several well-known wildlife attractions. These are not quick stops from The Heads, so choose one or two rather than trying to do everything in one day.

George for a proper rainy-day reset
George is further, so treat it as a half- or full-day outing rather than a quick stop.
The Outeniqua Transport Museum is one of the stronger rainy-day options, especially for children who like trains, old cars and big displays. It is also good for mixed generations, because grandparents often enjoy it as much as the children do.
Garden Route Mall is the easier practical option. You can combine shopping, food and a movie at Ster-Kinekor without having to move around too much once you are there.
For more active children, Elevate Action Centre is a good high-energy option. The indoor trampoline area has more than 70 connected trampolines, with dodgeball, slam-dunk hoops and air-bag sections.
