This is not a guide to shopping centres. It is more a short list of places that are pleasant to wander through when you want to be out for a bit, but not committed to a full day trip. The Waterfront is good for boats, jewellery and gifts. Thesen Harbour Town has design shops, food stops and The Motorcycle Room. Woodmill Lane works if you want a town wander with a bit of Knysna history built in. Metelerkamps is dangerous if you like kitchens, homeware, coffee gadgets or the kind of small household things you did not know you needed.
Choose one area, two at most. Browsing stops being enjoyable once it turns into a route march.
The Knysna Waterfront
Start at the Waterfront if you want the simplest browse. You can walk between the shops, look at the boats, and enjoy a coffee or ice cream.
There is a good mix here: clothing boutiques, jewellery shops, gifts, curios, leather goods, crystals, sweets and small speciality stores. Leathers & Feathers is worth a look for ostrich leather handbags, wallets, belts and accessories. Knysna T-Shirt Co is an easy stop for something local and informal, while Crystal Cave tends to appeal to children, teens and anyone who likes stones, crystals or small keepsakes.
For gifts, African Attitude, Woodland Beads, Bello and Porter & Craft are useful names to keep in mind. If children need a small treat between shops, Île de Chocolat, Scoops or Antonio’s can help make the outing last a little longer.
With children, the boats and the small Waterfront Junction display help break up the browsing. It is not a whole-day outing, but it can easily fill an hour or two before heading back towards The Heads.
Thesen Island
The browsing part of Thesen Island is Thesen Harbour Town, where most of the shops sit along the road leading towards the restaurants and small kids’ play area. It has a more designed feel than the Waterfront, with interiors, clothing, jewellery, homeware, art, food stops and waterside views all close together.
It works well when adults want to browse but the outing still needs to suit children. Walk the main strip first, then carry on towards the restaurant area if younger children need a play. Older children and teens may prefer The Motorcycle Room, especially if they like bikes, engines or old memorabilia.
Woodmill Lane
Woodmill Lane is worth a wander if you are already in the centre of town. It is built on the site of Knysna’s old sawmill, and the timber history gives it more character than an ordinary shopping centre.
You will find a mix of practical stops, smaller shops, gift stores and places to browse. It is also useful if you need to combine a short wander with an obligatory errand, because Pick n Pay is there too.
This is the kind of stop that works best when you are not looking for anything too specific. Have a look, see what is open, and let it be a short town wander rather than a mission.
Knysna Book Shop and Exchange
Knysna Book Shop and Exchange, run by Denise Crain in the Demar Centre on Main Street, is worth adding if you enjoy second-hand books. It has a friendly, old-fashioned bookshop feel, with shelves worth taking your time over and a good chance of finding something to read back at the chalet.
It is a lovely stop on a winter morning, especially if you want something quieter than a shopping centre or need a book for a rainy afternoon.
Metelerkamps
Metelerkamps is enticing if you like kitchens, homeware, coffee gadgets or the kind of small household things you did not know you needed. It is tucked just off Waterfront Drive, so it works well as a short stop while you are already in town.
This is not a souvenir shop, it is more useful than that: cookware, appliances, tableware, good-looking practical things and gifts that feel like someone actually thought about them.
The German Shop
The German Shop on Waterfront Drive is a good little detour if you enjoy imported European food and household goods. It stocks German, Dutch, Austrian and Italian specialities, along with kitchenware, toys, crafts, candles and seasonal items.
It is also a good stop if you need a small gift that does not feel generic.
Back to the lagoon
For guests staying with The Milkwood Collection, a slow morning in town is a short drive away. You can browse for an hour or two, and be back beside the lagoon by lunchtime.
