There are friendships that survive largely on voice notes, group chats and repeated promises to “actually make a plan this year”.
A weekend away is a good way to fix that.
Knysna is an easy place for a weekend with friends. There is enough to do if everyone feels energetic, but also enough reason to do very little. You can spend the morning browsing shops, have a long lunch beside the water, book a treatment, take a boat trip or paddle on the lagoon, then head back to the chalet or villa for a relaxed evening together.
Whether the group is made up of friends from school, sisters, mothers and daughters, a book club or simply people who have not had enough uninterrupted time together lately, here is one way to spend a girls’ weekend in Knysna.
Choose accommodation that works for the group
A self-catering house or villa gives everyone space to gather, while still having the freedom to do things at your own pace. There can be coffee in pyjamas, a late breakfast, time on the deck and plenty of space simply to catch up.

At Paquita, the deck looks straight over the lagoon and mountains, making it a lovely place to linger at the end of the day.
Saturday morning: coffee first, then browse
Saturday morning is a good time to explore some of Knysna’s boutiques.
Start around Gray Street, where Two on Toast is in the Rex Hotel complex. The independent boutique has been around since 2013 and stocks clothing, footwear, jewellery and accessories chosen for shoppers looking for pieces outside the usual chain-store mix.
The Daily Coffee Café is at the same 8 Gray Street address, making it an easy place to start with breakfast or coffee before browsing the nearby shops.
From there, you could move on to Thesen Harbour Town. Holiday Resortwear has a Knysna store here and is particularly good for colourful clothing and accessories influenced by coastal living.
Or head for the Knysna Waterfront, where the mix includes Love That, Out of the Blue, Luna, Sublime, Eye Love and a number of other fashion and accessory stores. The shops sit around the harbour, making it easy to browse at your own pace before stopping for lunch.

Make time for a relaxed lunch
Both the Waterfront and Thesen Harbour Town make it easy to turn shopping into a long lunch.
At the Waterfront, 34 South serves throughout the day and combines its restaurant with a deli, wine shop and food store, useful if you want to take something back for an easy dinner at the chalet or villa.
Over on Thesen Island, Sirocco is a good option for lunch or dinner, with views across the lagoon.
Both areas have plenty of other options if you prefer to decide on the day.
Saturday afternoon: make time to unwind
Not every friend in the group will have the same idea of relaxation.
For some, it may be a spa treatment. Zen-Sense Day Spa in Knysna offers massages, aromatherapy and body treatments, as well as treatment options for groups.
For others, the answer may be getting out on the water. Several operators offer cruises on the Knysna Lagoon, including sunset options. Knysna Charters offers a 90-minute sunset cruise, with several other cruise and sailing options available locally. As with any water-based outing, times and routes can depend on conditions, so it is worth booking ahead and confirming the details for your dates.
Or simply head back to the chalet or villa and spend the afternoon by the lagoon.

Saturday night: make an evening of it
A weekend away with friends is a good excuse to make a little more of dinner.

But one advantage of a self-catering weekend is that staying in can be just as appealing as going out.
Pick up something for dinner, light the braai (BBQ), and eat overlooking the lagoon. For some groups, that may be the best way to spend the evening.
Sunday: stay close to The Heads
If the weather is good, start at the beach. Paddle, walk along the water or simply have a slow breakfast on the deck.
Then spend a little time exploring the Eastern Head. Drive up to the Heads Viewpoint for the wide view across the estuary, the channel between the two Heads and the ocean beyond.
Afterwards, head back down towards the water and walk along the pathway at the foot of the cliffs. From here, you get a completely different perspective of the narrow mouth of the estuary and the rocky shoreline around the Eastern Head.
Nearby Coney Glen is also worth a stop, with its small beach, rocks and rock pools. It is an easy place for a short walk or simply to spend some time near the ocean before lunch.
Finish at East Head Café, overlooking the water at the Eastern Head, for breakfast, coffee or lunch before heading home.
You don’t need a special occasion
A birthday is a lovely excuse. So is a reunion, a book-club weekend, Women’s Month or another milestone worth celebrating.
Sometimes the reason is simply that everyone has been saying, “We really should do this,” for far too long.
