A holiday in Knysna is shaped by sunshine, water, and relaxed living. And when you stay at The Milkwood Collection (right on the edge of the lagoon) your days shift naturally between swims, strolls, deck time and sundowners under the Milkwood trees.
To help you arrive prepared (but not overpacked), here’s a simple guide on what to bring for a summer stay on the lagoon.
Essentials for the Water

The lagoon will likely be the centre of your trip, so plan for time in and on the water:
- Swimwear — more than one set if you’re in and out all day
- Beach towel or quick-dry towel
- Rash vest (helpful for SUP or long paddles)
- Sun hat & sunglasses
- Water shoes (helpful for sandbanks and shallow channels at low tide)
- Light cover-up for café stops or walking back from the beach
Complimentary kayaks and SUPs are provided for all guests.
Sun Protection

The Garden Route sun can be strong in midsummer, especially near the water.
- High-SPF sunscreen
- After-sun lotion or aloe
- A light long-sleeve layer for midday shade-seeking
- Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated on outings
Clothing & Footwear

Knysna is casual even at its most stylish.
- Cool daytime clothing (shorts, T-shirts, breezy dresses)
- Comfortable shoes for walking the Heads or Leisure Isle
- Slip-ons or sandals for quick lagoon access
- Light jacket or wrap — evenings can be cooler on the water
- Something a little smarter for a dinner out on the Heads or Waterfront
For Active Days Out

If you’re planning a nature or adventure activity:
- Day pack
- Small dry bag for water activities (phones + keys safe and dry)
- Phone case with lanyard for photos while paddling
- Binoculars if you enjoy bird spotting around the lagoon and forest
Tech & Handy Extras
- Charger and power bank (though there are USB charging points in all our properties if you prefer to pack light)
- A good book, travel games or cards for afternoon deck time (we have a small selection of books, games and DVDs available at Reception)
- Camera (or just keep your phone ready at sunset)
Optional, But Great to Have

- Beach umbrella or shade tent if you like extra cover on Bollard Bay. Our waterfront lounging area at Under Milkwood has natural shade from the Milkwood trees, with a couple of large umbrellas set up in the sunny spots.
- Picnic gear for spontaneous forest- or lagoon-side lunches
- Cooler bag for market treats or seaside snacks
What You Don’t Need
We’ve got you covered for a lot of the bulky items:
