The Knysna Oyster Festival is best known for its oysters, wine, and sports challenges, but it’s also a fantastic time for families to visit the Garden Route. With school holidays in full swing, the festival transforms the town into a playground of art, sport, creativity, and outdoor fun for kids of all ages.

Let young imaginations run wild with hands-on workshops and art-inspired play. This year’s lineup includes:
Oyster Festival Kids Art Jam
Daily sessions from 8–10 July at 34 Waenhout, in the Old Wood Factory. Designed for children aged 6+, each session includes step-by-step painting with all materials provided. Limited to 20 kids per session, so book ahead on Quicket.
Puppet-Making Workshops & Parade
Held daily from 7–13 July at the Festival Hub. Children can create their own puppet characters using recycled materials, with guidance from local artists. Their work then becomes part of the Flock for the Future Puppet Parade on 13 July — a festive, family-friendly event celebrating community creativity.

2. Active Adventures and Outdoor Play
If your kids love to move, the festival has plenty to offer:
Oyster Games Family Day (12 July)
Held at Eden Tactical in Rheenendal, this high-energy day is all about teamwork and laughter. Events include “Dads & Lads,” “Girls Rule,” “Family Feud“ and “Young vs Old,” encouraging families to compete in a spirit of fun. Booking is essential.
Night Walk Adventures & Family Nature Trails (4 & 11 July)
Join a guided Night Adventure Walk through the forest at Blackwaters River Lodge (lanterns provided!) Or opt for daytime nature hikes and pitch & putt golf, ideal for younger children and grandparents too.
Adventure & Nature Family Experience (7 — 13 July)
Explore the riverside and surrounding forest with a guide, at Blackwaters River Lodge. Includes a mini obstacle course and canoeing (book 24 hrs in advance).
3. Games, Inflatables & the Festival Hub (7 — 13 July)
The Knysna High School Sports Field is the heart of the festival and the place kids want to be. Daily from 10:00–21:00, the hub features:
- Wildlife Warriors Challenge Zone. Fairground games include mini putt putt, buzz wire, giant Jenga, SplatAttack, a photo booth and more
- Inflatable Alley with jumping castles and slides
- Photo booths, music, and food stalls
You’ll also find casual food options, perfect for fuss-free family lunches or quick bites between events.
4. Pet-Friendly & Feel-Good Events
Fancy-Dress Dog Walk (6 July, 10:00 at Totties Country Market)
Dress up your pup and walk for a good cause. Fun for animal lovers of all ages.
Pet Adoption Days & Market Fun
The Festival Hub also hosts occasional animal rescue pop-ups, giving kids the chance to meet (and possibly adopt) furry friends. Look out for thrift stalls and wellness markets nearby.
5. Relax and Recharge by the Lagoon
