The Knysna Oyster Festival has been a fixture of the Garden Route calendar since 1983. It began as the Winter Festival, a practical idea dreamed up by local businessman Dick Ginsberg and Rose Smith of the Knysna Publicity Association.
Their aim was simple: to bring people into town during the quietest months of the year. By the mid-80s, it had been renamed the Knysna Oyster Festival. It has since grown into one of South Africa’s best-loved winter events.
This year the festival runs from 3 to 12 July, and the theme is “A Feast of Family Fun”. Ten days of activity, with the Knysna Forest Marathon kick-starting the first weekend and the Knysna Cycle Tour rounding off the second.
Sport and Spirit
The two headline sporting events remain the heartbeat of the festival, and entries tend to fill up well in advance.
The Knysna Forest Marathon (3–4 July) takes runners through the indigenous forest on routes of 21km and 42km. Registration takes place on Friday the 3rd at the Festival Hub, with race day on Saturday the 4th. There is a welcoming ambience to race day that keeps people coming back year after year – a shared sense of achievement that spills over into the town’s cafes and restaurants long after the finish line is crossed.
Adding to the excitement of the first weekend, the Festival Hub will host a live screening of the Springboks vs. England match on Saturday afternoon. It’s a highlight of the 2026 programme, promising an electric atmosphere as locals and visitors gather to cheer on the world champions.
The Knysna Cycle Tour (10–12 July) closes the festival on a high. While registration opens on Friday the 10th, the competitive action is split across the weekend: Mountain Bike (MTB) races and family rides take place on Saturday the 11th, followed by the Road Races and the adrenaline-fuelled Enduro on Sunday the 12th.
Food, Oysters, and the Good Life
The oysters are, of course, central to everything. From shucking championships to the lively “Oyster Alley” food markets, the festival is a true culinary showcase.
For those who enjoy a sophisticated pour, the Knysna Fine Wine Festival is always a favourite, while the 2026 Knysna Gin Jol offers a more contemporary spirit to the line-up. Between the prestigious “Flavours of Knysna” gourmet evening and various wine tastings across town, the festival remains as much about the “good life” as it is about the sport.
Worth noting: most of the oysters served today come from Algoa Bay and Saldanha Bay rather than the Knysna Lagoon itself, where commercial farming stopped when permits were not renewed in 2010. However, wild oysters are still harvested by professional pickers during a short annual window, maintaining a link to the coast’s traditional roots.
A Feast of Family Fun
True to the 2026 theme, the programme is packed with activities for all ages. The “Oyster Court Kids” area, the Model Railway and Hobbies Fair, and various family fun runs ensure that younger visitors are well catered for.
