Autumn in Knysna might be quieter than the summer holidays, but the town certainly doesn’t go quiet. March through May brings a handful of events that give visitors a good reason to head into town — from small music gatherings in the forest to lively weekends around the harbour.
If you’re staying near the Knysna Heads, most of these are just a short drive away. It’s easy to spend an afternoon or evening enjoying the atmosphere and return afterwards to the calm of the lagoon.
Here are a few events worth keeping an eye on this season.
Knysna Fringe Festival
19–21 March
For three days in March, the Knysna Fringe Festival brings theatre, comedy, music and visual art to venues across town.
Performances take place in spaces like the Knysna Gin Bar and Simola Hotel, with a mix of established artists and newer acts. It’s a good way to experience a more creative side of Knysna, with plenty happening throughout the day and into the evening.
Italy in Town – Thesen Harbour Town
21–22 March
For one weekend, Thesen Harbour Town takes on a distinctly Italian feel.
The harbour area turns into a lively street festival with food stalls, live music and plenty happening throughout the day. Expect everything from wood-fired pizzas and handmade pasta to gelato, wine and classic Italian cars on display.
Simola Hillclimb
30 April – 3 May
Later in the season, Knysna shifts gears with the Simola Hillclimb, part of the Knysna Speed Festival.
Drivers race against the clock up the winding Simola Hill road just outside town. The event attracts everything from historic race cars to modern supercars, making it one of South Africa’s most popular motorsport weekends.
Even if you’re not a die-hard car enthusiast, the atmosphere and variety of vehicles make it worth seeing.
Live Music and Shows
Alongside the bigger festivals, there’s a steady run of live shows through late March and April, especially at venues like Simola Hotel and Knysna Gin Bar.
Tribute concerts are a regular feature, with performances celebrating artists like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Smokie, Fleetwood Mac and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. These are usually easy, relaxed evenings out with well-known music in a comfortable setting.
There are also a few standout one-night performances during this time. Comedian Kurt Schoonraad brings his latest stand-up show to Knysna in early April, while theatre and music fans can catch Webber & I – Any Dream Will Do, a live performance built around the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
For something more intimate, smaller venues around town host acoustic and live sessions, including performances by artists like Guy Buttery and Nibs van der Spuy, as well as visiting international acts such as Canadian singer-songwriter Billy Raffoul.
Later in the season, tribute shows continue with performances like Someone Like Adele, which runs over the same weekend as the Simola Hillclimb.
If you’re staying near the Heads, evenings tend to feel quieter than the centre of town. The Milkwood Collection’s waterfront properties offer direct access to the water, with wide views across the lagoon after a day out in Knysna.
