The long summer holidays are officially over. We imagine that, for most children, it\u2019s a time of mixed feelings bouncing between the excitement over reuniting with BFFs and butterflies in the tummies <\/em>about the new school year.<\/em><\/p>\n

At Under Milkwood, we already miss the children with their boundless energy and joyful laughter, seeing them have the time of their lives on the beach, playing in the gentle waters of the lagoon and relishing mint ice creams with colourful sprinkles on Old Year\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

During the first week of school, many teachers may ask the children to share what they did during their holiday, and often it\u2019s a good idea to let your child take a memento from their holiday to show their friends. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been away on holiday – you can still find interesting objects around your house or on outings in your town or neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

Below are some ideas to inspire you and your child for their next vacation show and tell.<\/p>\n

HOLIDAY DIARY OR SCRAPBOOK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Making a holiday diary or scrapbook is great fun. Use drawings, photos, postcards, foreign money and other interesting things your child has picked up, to illustrate written snippets about the holiday. She or he can write about people they met, activities they did and what they liked most about their holiday.<\/p>\n

PICTURE STORY<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your child doesn\u2019t really enjoy writing, you can encourage them to take photos during their holiday. Print the photos and make an album, or arrange a slide show on your computer or tablet. Let the pictures tell a story.<\/p>\n

NATURE IN A BOX<\/strong><\/p>\n

Still holding on to those Christmas chocolate boxes? Give them to your child to transform into a ‘nature box’. Let your child collect things from his or her natural surroundings. It can be anything from shells and pebbles from the beach to interesting leaves or flowers. Unusual rocks or fossils will also make the collection more interesting. To each item in the box, you could add a piece of paper that states the date and location where they were found.<\/p>\n

FACT FILE<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your child visited another country during the holidays, you could help them put together a little fact file. You can add a map and find other information online. Look for fun facts about the place that will interest other kids in the class.<\/p>\n

SUMMER IN A CAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let your child collect items from their holiday and put them in a Pringles can. As she or he pulls each item out of the can, they can talk about the memories surrounding that item and why it was an important part of their holiday. Your child can also decorate the outside of the can to represent themselves or their holiday.<\/p>\n

MEMORY JAR<\/strong><\/p>\n

Create a mini holiday-in-a-jar with little souvenirs, photographs, and whatever else your child wants to put in it. Items can be added over time and your child can rearrange them anytime. A wide-necked jar is easiest, but you can use bent wire to place objects in a thin-necked jar.<\/p>\n

NATURE WALK BRACELET<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keep a roll of colourful duct tape and a pair of scissors in the car. With treasures picked up during outdoor walks and hikes, your child can make an interesting bracelet. Objects like leaves and flowers can be attached to the tape to double as a holiday keepsake.<\/p>\n

MAKE A DIORAMA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dioramas can have any theme. You can make one about animals or perhaps a scene from the airport, or your hotel. Kids can combine maps and little treasures they found on the holiday to make an interesting diorama.<\/p>\n
