Knysna Literary Festival
6 – 8 March
Thesen Islands, Knysna
Offering a diverse and inspiring programme, the festival is fast becoming a must-attend with bookworms and lovers of all things literary. The event caters for everyone and touches on matters such as current affairs and politics, history, adventure, conservation, cuisine and storytelling. All best-selling authors are either local or have close ties to South Africa and have been selected not only for their literary talents but also for their skills in entertaining and delighting audiences with readings, conversations, debates and workshops.
REMAX Coastal Knysna Heads Marathon
Thesen Harbour Town
The routes have been carefully chosen to allow you to enjoy your qualifier and set you up for a good time as the highest point is only 30m above sea level. Fast and scenic does not always go together but here it does. Take a tour of Knysna that hugs the water for all but 2.4 km of the entire route. Late entries will still be accepted on race day at registration with a R20 late entry fee. Registration takes place at Remax Coastal on Thesen Island, Knysna on race day 8 March. Registration starts at 5am.
Knysna Timber Festival
13 – 15 March
Timber Village, Knysna
Taking place in the town where South Africa’s timber industry first took root, the Knysna Timber Festival showcases local timber and woodworking materials, machinery, manufacturers, products, services and industry innovations. Knysna’s renowned cabinet making, woodturning and wood carving skills are on display. This year, the festival will include more entertainment with additional events encompassing Timber Sports, log sawing skills exhibitions, physical endurance and strength demos, live music shows and more. A special emphasis will be placed on family entertainment and historical items of interest from Knysna’s timber-related past.
Sedgefield’s Slow Festival (Postponed: Save The Date… fingers crossed. 24th to 27th September)
27 – 29 March
Village Green, Sedgefield
Slow Festival is all about having fun the old-fashioned way. Celebrating the great outdoors in and around the seaside town of Sedgefield, the Slow Festival includes a wide range of fantastic events and activities for all ages and interests. There will be food and drink stalls on the Village Green and lots of events to keep the family entertained.
Garden Route Airshow (postponed to 26th of September 2020)
Airshows are enjoyed by people of all ages, and the Garden Route Airshow will be no exception. For the first time in 25 years, the skies above George will be filled with the sound of high-performance aircraft and display teams from around the country. The show is being held to generate funding for the assistance of fire fighting in the Southern Cape.
Knysna Motor Show (Cancelled)
Knysna High School Fields, Knysna
Organised annually by the Garden Route Motor Club, the event showcases selected Classic and Vintage cars with its main purpose being to raise money for local charities. Participants, from all over the country, are personally invited to ensure a show with a difference. The show is completed with entertainment for the children, gourmet food stalls and a beer garden – all set in a relaxed country style atmosphere in the heart of the Garden Route.
Jaguar Simola Hillclimb
7 – 10 May
Simola Hill, Knysna
The 2020 line-up of cars and activity promises to be better than ever, while the smoke, noise, vibe, excitement levels and off-track activities are the epitome of good entertainment. Whether you are a petrol head, speed lover or just someone who loves a good time – don’t miss out – you will leave satisfied and enthralled at the spectacle. The weekend kicks off with the Fan Fest including the Classic Car Display and Parade in Hedge Street, and from there on in it is non-stop entertainment for the rest of the weekend.
Knysna Oyster Festival (As no time frames are possible at this stage, they will continue to monitor and evaluate the various scenarios and federation notifications that would impact the staging of this festival.)
26 June – 5 July
The festival will offer a programme of unique events for sport lovers, families and adventurers, with plenty of activities spread over ten days. There will be no shortage of fun, and a chance to experience one of the most beautiful, scenic areas in the country. The festival offers something for everyone – from running, cycling and adventure racing to wine tastings, cooking competitions, food and wine pairings, and inflatable fun for the kids.
Sporting events include the Knysna Cycle Tour MTB (June 27th), The Knysna Cycle Tour Road Race (June 28th), The Knysna Forest Marathon (July 4th), and The Houtkapper Trail Run (July 5th).
Food and wine events include Flavours of Knysna (1st of July) and the Knysna Wine Festival (3rd of July).
Rastafari Earth Festival
22 – 30 July
Judah Square, Knysna
The vibrant Rastafarian community of Knysna invites Rastas and visitors from all walks of life, from South Africa and abroad to participate in the annual Rasta Earth Festival. This colourful, rich festival celebrates the Rastafarian way of life – their food and music, as well as the philosophy behind this sometimes-misunderstood faith. All in celebration of His Majesty Haile-I Selassie-I’s Earthday (Birthday) and Emancipation Day.
National Golf Festival
3 – 7 July
NGF incorporates the picturesque towns of George, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, and offers players an option to choose their own itinerary from 10 world-class golf courses over 4 days. Courses to choose from include Fancourt Outeniqua and Montagu, Pinnacle Point, Oubaai, Simola, Kingswood, Mossel Bay Golf Club, Pezula, George Golf Club and Goose Valley. There will be an expo, workshops, prize-giving, seafood experience and entertainment. What makes NGF different from other golf tours is that everything is catered for in terms of golf, functions and entertainment and you get to meet many other players whilst having a lot of fun.
Eden Kite Festival
Kite fliers from around the country fly their giant kites as well as artistic creations of all shapes and sizes. Well-regarded in the international kiting community, the 4-day event makes Eden the biggest kite festival in Africa.
Carols by Candlelight – Knysna Waterfront
Entry by donation to Knysna-Sedgefield Hospice. Attendees are requested to bring a gift, which Father Christmas, who always makes an appearance, can collect and distribute to the needy children of Knysna. Candles and song sheets are provided, and the families gather around the gazebo where, accompanied by a choir and band, they sing all the familiar songs of Christmas. The highlight of the evening is the lighting of the memory candles. People can buy memory candles during the two weeks preceding the event and on the evening for this purpose.
Carols by Candlelight – Leisure Isle
Kings Park, Leisure Isle
Hosted by Lagoonside Baptist Church, Garden Route Ministry Team and Knysna Hope. this annual event takes place at Kings Park on Leisure isle (the grass section in front of Sothebys offices). It’s a wonderful family event. Bring a comfy chair and picnic basket, if you want, and some very merry Christmas cheer.
Knysna Blues Festival
Get ready for the most extreme line-up of South African Blues artists. The Blues genre gave birth to Rock n Roll, Country & Western, Pop, Funk and even R&B. It is truly multi-cultural and multi-generational, and the ideal match for both the Knysna environment and its mix of cultures.
Knysna Lagoon Splash
The Rotary Knysna Lagoon Splash is an entertaining water-based family festival. Two exciting events provide enjoyment for both participants and spectators and challenges for the whole family! Brave the waters and swim the Splash Knysna Lagoon Mile and/or watch your yellow duck race in the Splash Quack Attack Duck Race. You can have a great time while supporting some of Knysna’s community projects. The Splash festival promises to be lots of fun for the whole family – competitors and spectators!
