Experience the Garden Route’s longest and highest zipline

We are calling on all adrenaline junkies because the Garden Route has a brand-new and exciting adventure activity!

The new Knysna Ziplines, which were officially opened to the public on Friday, has the longest and highest zipline on the Garden Route.

Located within the Sanparks Kranshoek picnic site, the adrenaline-filled experience will have you gliding over the treetops while you enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding forest.

Adventure guides, who will operate the zip line, have been seconded from other South African Forest Adventures sites and have thorough training in safety, according to SANParks.

After briefing and orientation, visitors will embark on an amazing drive through the Harkerville forest. The knowledgeable guides will be able to field any questions relating to the forest and its wildlife. Mammals found in the park include bush pigs, baboons, bushbucks, Cape clawless otters and leopards, while the marine life includes Southern right whales and dolphins.

The zipline is 2,2km in total. It is currently operating with four lines, to be increased to six lines by the end of the year. The tour cables vary in length, from 380 meters to just under 700 meters. At heights of over 200 metres, it offers scenic views of the ocean, fynbos and indigenous forests and promises to be a memorable experience.

A project that would normally take eight months to complete, in the end, took more than three years. SA Forest Adventures, the company awarded the tender to build the ziplines, was given the green light to start with construction in 2017, but the project was put on hold by the Knysna fires that year. Subsequently, work started in late 2018 and was completed just before the lockdown in March.

SANParks expects that the new attraction will bring 10,000 extra visitors to the park in its first year.

They currently offer an opening special of R400 per person for the local South African Market (only for the month of September and some dates in October 2020). From November 2020 the rate will be R800 pp. Adventurers can hire GoPro cameras for R300 to record their zipline experience.

The office is situated at Harkerville Forest Lodge, which is 15 km from Plettenberg Bay and 20 km from Knysna.
